Common Questions

Training FAQ

Can't find your answer? Call (240) 749-1141 or email us.

What security guard training does Maryland require?
Maryland requires a 12-hour initial training course from an MPCTC-approved provider before you can apply for your Security Guard license through the Maryland State Police. Our course meets all MPCTC requirements and includes a written examination. You'll also need LiveScan fingerprinting and a $50 MSP application fee — both separate from training.
What is SPO training and who needs it?
Special Police Officer (SPO) training is an 80-hour MPCTC-approved program required to obtain a Maryland SPO commission. SPOs have limited law enforcement authority — including the power to arrest — within their commissioned jurisdiction. You need SPO certification if you or your employer requires commissioned officers with arrest authority on-site. A sponsoring agency is required to apply for the commission.
What is the HQL and do I need one?
The Handgun Qualification License (HQL) is required before you can purchase, rent, or receive a handgun in Maryland. To get one you must complete a QHI-certified training course, complete LiveScan fingerprinting, and submit a $50 application to the Maryland State Police. Our Track A course ($175) satisfies the training requirement.
What is the difference between HQL and Wear & Carry?
The HQL allows you to purchase or receive a handgun in Maryland. The Wear & Carry Permit allows you to carry a concealed handgun in public. They are separate licenses with separate applications. Our Track B course ($299) covers the training requirement for both in one combined 2-day program — the most efficient path if you want both.
How long does Maryland security guard training take?
The initial 12-hour security guard certification is split over 2 days (6 hours each). SPO Entrance Level Training is 80 hours split over multiple sessions. HQL-only training (Track A) is approximately 5 hours in one day. HQL + Wear & Carry (Track B) and Security Guard + Wear & Carry (Track C) are each 2-day programs of approximately 8 hours per day.
Where are classes held?
All classes are held at our Nottingham / White Marsh facility in Baltimore County, Maryland — 9920 Franklin Square Dr, Suite 110, Nottingham, MD 21236. We serve students from all Maryland counties. Book online 24/7 at nationwidepoliceservicesllc.as.me or call (240) 749-1141.
Do you provide security officers Nationwide?
Nationwide Police Services LLC is currently licensed and operating in Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, with active expansion underway. All deployed officers hold valid state security licenses and applicable firearms qualifications for their jurisdiction. If your location falls outside our current licensed states, contact us directly — we work to accommodate clients on a case-by-case basis and can often mobilize to meet your needs. Call (240) 749-1141 or email Info@NationwidePolice.com for a free consultation.
Do you offer online training courses?
Select courses are available in an online format, however as a premier training provider we strongly prefer in-person instruction to ensure full student engagement and comprehension. Many of our courses — particularly SPO certification, defensive tactics, and firearms qualification — require hands-on application that simply cannot be replicated online. Teaching arrest powers and physical techniques through a screen does a disservice to both the student and the public they will serve. For course-specific questions, contact us at Training@NationwidePolice.com or call (240) 749-1141.
