Q What is an HQL and how do I get one in Maryland?

An HQL (Handgun Qualification License) is required to purchase, rent, or receive a handgun in Maryland. To obtain one, you must complete a qualified handgun safety course, submit fingerprints, and apply through the Maryland State Police. Q How long is the Maryland security guard training course?

The initial Maryland security guard certification course is 12 hours. The Special Police Officer (SPO) entrance level course is 80 hours. SPO annual in-service renewal is 12 hours. Firearms, tactical, and specialty courses vary by subject. All courses are held at our White Marsh, Baltimore County location.
