Do You Need Armed Security for Your Event?

May 20, 2025  ·  6 min read  ·  Nationwide Police Services

You're planning an event. At some point the question comes up: do we need security? And if so, does it need to be armed? It's a question we get constantly at Nationwide Police Services. Getting it wrong in either direction has real consequences.

What's the Actual Risk Level?

The first thing we assess is the realistic threat environment. Key factors include:

  • Attendance size — larger crowds increase incident probability
  • Alcohol service — events serving alcohol see higher rates of altercations
  • Venue type — outdoor festival vs. hotel ballroom are entirely different environments
  • Event type — corporate conference carries different risks than a nightlife event
  • Public vs. private — open events require more perimeter control
  • Known threats — any history of conflict changes the calculus significantly

Unarmed Security Officers

Unarmed officers are the most common choice for events. A professional uniformed officer provides visible deterrence, entrance management, crowd management, and incident response. For most corporate events, private parties, and family-oriented gatherings, well-trained unarmed officers are entirely sufficient. The key word is well-trained.

Armed Security Officers

Armed officers are appropriate when the event is in a higher-crime area, there's a known elevated threat, high-profile individuals are present, alcohol is served to large outdoor crowds, or the venue historically attracts conflict. Our armed officers are trained professionals who meet Maryland's requirements for armed security — not security guards who happen to have guns.

Off-Duty Police Officers

For the highest-risk events, we recommend off-duty law enforcement. They bring full arrest authority under their police commission, direct communication with on-duty law enforcement, experience managing high-stakes situations daily, and a level of deterrence that uniformed police presence uniquely provides. Nightclubs, large outdoor festivals, and events in elevated-crime areas should strongly consider off-duty police as part of the security team.

How Many Officers Do You Need?

  • Under 100 guests — 1–2 officers for low-risk events
  • 100–300 guests — 2–4 officers depending on venue and alcohol service
  • 300–1,000 guests — 4–8 officers with post-based and roving personnel
  • 1,000+ guests — custom security plan required

For events with alcohol service, add at least one additional officer per 100 guests. For outdoor festivals with multiple entry points, each entry point needs dedicated personnel.

Questions to Ask Any Security Company

  • Are your officers licensed in Maryland?
  • Are armed officers individually firearms-qualified per MSP standards?
  • Will you conduct a site walk before the event?
  • What's your protocol when an incident escalates?
  • Are you insured and can you provide a certificate of insurance for the venue?

The Bottom Line

The best event security is security nobody notices — professional officers who handle situations quietly and efficiently.
